Playing to Learn

Institute of Playstudies

The Institute of Playstudies is a research and educational initiative with an emphasis on learning and working associated with virtual worlds.

We explore how virtual social worlds and large-scale collaborative games will become new models for participatory learning environments and their possible shift towards being corporate operating systems for next generation enterprises.

We investigate principles that drive successful multiplayer online games and other sophisticated collaborative software to illuminate inherent qualities that enhance learning, collaboration, innovation and productivity.

Our aim is to offer expertise on applying game design and game theory to real work and real business, and to consult and to develop workshops and training for educational institutions and enterprises in both the non-profit and the commercial sector.

Our goals are to

  • offer support for the development and/or realization of new learning technologies and working prototypes.

  • initiate collaboration between students, educators, and game designers with the goal to develop innovative curricula around new media literacies and other 21st century skills.

  • offer meaningful experiences that bridge digital and non-digital learning environments.

  • offer a learning research and teaching program that evaluates the impact of technology on learning, teaching and working and to publish the learning outcomes of new educational prototypes.

  • providing literature reviews that survey research done in education and technology.

  • organising symposia, workshops and conferences.

  • provide a space for the experimentation and exchange of ideas across creative, technology, management and education sectors.
